Justice Amitava Roy sworn in as Supreme Court judge

He was the chief justice of Orissa high court. With his elevation, the no. of the apex court judges has gone up to 29.

The apex court has a sectioned strength of 31 judges.

Justice Roy will have a tenure of three years.

Article 124 of Constitution of India says that the judge of SC shall be appointed by the President.

Any citizen of India who has been a judge of one high court or more, for at least five years or an advocate there, for at least ten years, or a distinguished jurist, in the opinion of the president, is eligible to be appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court.
