1. Cabinet Launched Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan

 

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by the PM, Narendra Modi has launched the Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan (RGSA) at Mandla in Madhya Pradesh

 

 This scheme will extend to all States and UTs of the Country and will also include institutions of rural local government in areas, where Panchayats do not exist.

 

 The scheme will have both Central Component like National Level activities including “National Plan of Technical Assistance”, “Mission Mode project on e-Panchayat”, “Incentivization of Panchayats” and State component as Capacity Building of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI).

 

 

 

2. Union Cabinet approved death penalty for child rapists

 

The Union Cabinet has approved an ordinance to allow courts to pronounce the death penalty to those convicted of raping children up to 12 years of age.

 

 Ordinance approved by the Cabinet also prescribes the minimum punishment in case of rape of women to increase from the rigorous imprisonment of 7 years to 10 years, extendable to life imprisonment.

 

 In case of rape of a girl under 16 years, minimum punishment has been increased from 10 years to 20 years, extendable to imprisonment for rest of life, which means imprisonment till that person’s natural life.

 

 

 

3. Madras HC becomes 1st court in South India to introduce e-court fee payment facility

 

The Madras High Court became the first court in South India and overall eighth in the country to introduce e-court fee payment facility.

 

 It will provide easier and secure way of paying stamp duty. It will also help to tackle sale of counterfeit judicial stamps duty.

 

 The advantage of this system is that the court fee can be paid as and when the user desires without bothering about non-availability of physical stamps.

 

 

 

4. Sundarban Reserve Forest to get Ramsar site status

 

The Sundarban Reserve Forest will be recognized as the Ramsar site soon. West Bengal Government has given its approval to State Forest Department to apply for coveted Ramsar Site recognition under Ramsar Convention to Sundarban Reserve Forest.

 

 Sundarbans Reserve Forest will be largest protected wetland in the country after getting approval as Ramsar

 

 The status wetland of international importance under Ramsar Convention will help in conservation of Sundarban (World Heritage Site) which is facing threat from climate change and rising sea level.

 

 

 

 

5. Suresh Prabhu chaired 1st Meeting of Think Tank on Framework for National Policy on E-Commerce

 

Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu, has inaugurated the 1st meeting of the think tank on the Framework for National Policy on E-commerce.

 

 The Department of Commerce has established the think tank on the Framework for National Policy on E-commerce recently.

 

 The meeting will provide a reliable forum for an inclusive and fact-based dialogue leading to recommendations for informed policymaking to take advantage of the opportunities, and meet the challenges, that would arise from the next wave of advancements in the digital

 

 

 

6. 1st Smart city to run on 100% Renewable Energy during daytime

 

Diu Smart City has become the first city in India, that runs on 100% renewable energy during daytime setting a new benchmark for other cities to become clean and green.

 

 A 9 MW solar park spread over 50 hectares rocky barren land has been developed besides installing solar panels on the rooftops on 79 government buildings to generate 1.3 MW electricity annually.

 

 To further enhance its solar capacity, Diu offers its residents a subsidy of INR 10, 000-50,000 for installing 1-5 KW rooftop solar panels.

 

 Diu is saving about 13,000 tons of carbon emissions every year.

 

 

 

7. Adopt Heritage Project: Government awards LoI for 22 monuments

 

The Ministry of Tourism has awarded Letters of Intent (LoI) to 9 agencies for 22 monuments under Adopt a Heritage Project: Apni Dharohar, Apni Pehchaan Scheme.

 

 The project primarily focuses on providing basic facilities that include cleanliness, public convenience, drinking water, ease of access for tourists, signage etc. and advanced amenities like a Souvenir shop, Cafeteria, TFC etc.

 

 

 

8. Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0 Launched by HRD Ministry

 

Minister of Human Resource Development Shri Prakash Javadekar has launched Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0 in New Delhi.

 

 Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0 is in line with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision to transform India, in which students from colleges and universities will go to nearby villages to get acquainted with the life of the village people and the problems faced by them in day to day life.

 

 

 

9. Relaxation to six-decade-old Protected Area Permit regime in Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur

 

Foreign tourists will now be allowed to visit Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur which are pristine locations of India, except those from Pakistan, China and Afghanistan.

 

 The home ministry has decided to relax the six-decade-old Protected Area Permit regime from Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur for five years with effect from April 1.

 

 The move is being initiated to promote tourism, create job opportunities for the locals and generate revenue for the states.

 

 

 

10. NITI Aayog announced the launch of Atal New India Challenges

 

The NITI Aayog has launched Atal New India Challenge under Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) with the aim to bring-in innovations and technologies relevant to the people.

 

 Under this initiative, applicants showing capability, intent, and potential to productize technologies will be awarded grants up to INR 1 crore.

 

 This initiative will focus on efforts towards solving problems in core areas, which would have a direct impact on improving lives of citizens and also generate employment.

 

 

 

11. Van Dhan scheme launched by PM to help increase tribal income

 

PM Narendra Modi has launched the Van Dhan Scheme of Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED) during the celebrations of Ambedkar Jayanti at Bijapur, Chhattisgarh.

 

 This scheme is for socio-economic development of tribal living in forests, for whom, collecting Minor Forest Produce (MFP) is a major source of livelihood.

1. Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2018 held in London

 

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2018, also known as CHOGM 2018, was the 25th meeting of the heads of government of the Commonwealth of Nations.

 

 It was held in the United Kingdom. PM Narendra Modi attended the meeting for India.

 

 Rwanda has been selected as host of the next Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), to be held in 2020.

 

 

 

2. 15th SCO Defence Ministers meeting was conducted in China

 

India has participated in the 15th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Defence Ministers Meeting for the first time, which was held at Beijing in China.

 

 Defence minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted India’s keen interest in developing an expanded partnership with the broader Eurasian region in the meeting.

 

 

 

3. India-China Informal Summit held in Wuhan

 

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has attended first Informal Summit with China’s President Xi Jinping held in Wuhan.

 

 The purpose of the meeting was to exchange views on overarching issues of bilateral and global importance and to elaborate their respective visions and priorities for national development in the context of current and future international situation.

 

 

 

4. Peace Mission: India, Pakistan to participate together in SCO counter-terror exercise

 

For the first time, arch-rivals India and Pakistan are taking part in Peace Mission, a multi-nation counter-terror exercise in Russia to be held in September 2018.

 

 The military exercise is going to take place under the framework of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

 

 Peace Mission counter-terror military exercise will be held in the Ural Mountains of Russia and almost all SCO member countries are taking part in it.

 

 

 

5. International Buddhist Conference held in Lumbini, Nepal

 

International Buddhist Conference was Conducted in Lumbini, Nepal on 29 and 30 April 2018 to commemorate Buddha Jayanti.

 

 The theme of the conference was ‘Lumbini Nepal: The birthplace of Lord Buddha and the fountain of Buddhism and world peace’.

 

 The basic objective of the conference was to disseminate teachings of Buddha and spread messages of nonviolence, brotherhood, co-existence, love and peace to international

 

 

 

6. Iran Bans Banks from Using Cryptocurrencies

 

Iran has banned the use of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies by its banks and financial institutions.

 

 As per the central bank of Iran, the ban was necessary since all cryptocurrencies have the capacity to be turned into a means for money-laundering and financing terrorism and in general can be turned into a means for transferring criminals’ money.

 

 

 

 

MMOUsemorandum of Understanding (MoU) | Get the Best Information Out of Top Agreements

 

 

1. IOB signed information utility pact with NeSL

 

One of the leading public-sector banks- Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) has signed an agreement for information utility services with the National E-Governance Services Limited (NeSL) to expedite the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process.

 

 The NeSL became India’s first information utility (IU) for bankruptcy cases under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) 2016 in October 2017.

 

 With this agreement, the IOB branches will be able to provide high-quality, authenticated information about debts and defaults.

 

 

 

2. CSIR and DoT sign an MoU for nationwide Time Stamping & Time Synchronization network

 

CSIR-National Physical Laboratory (CSIR-NPL) and Department of Telecommunications (DoT) have signed an agreement on technical knowledge sharing for establishing nationwide Time Stamping and Time Synchronization network (TSTSN) and traceability of Time signal to NPL Time.

 

 The nationwide TSTSN consisting of 22 numbers of Time Synchronization Centers (TSC’s) will be set up by DoT with technical assistance from CSIR-NPL.

 

 This network will provide a synchronizing pulse in Indian Standard Time (IST) to all Telecom & Internet Service providers (ISPs) in all 22 LSA (Licensed Service Areas) in the country.

 

 

 

3. National Biopharma Mission: Government signed an MoU with World Bank

 

The Union Government has signed an agreement with World Bank for flexible financing arrangement to accelerate research towards early development for biopharmaceuticals under National Biopharma Mission.

 

 Its objective is to strengthen the translational capability of academic researchers, empower bio-entrepreneurs and SMEs (Small and medium-sized enterprises) by decreasing cost and risk during initial stages of product development and also elevate innovation quotient of the industry.

 

 

 

4. India inks an MoU with World Bank to Improve Rural Road Network in MP

 

The Government of India, the Government of Madhya Pradesh and the World Bank have signed a $210 million loan agreement for the Madhya Pradesh Rural Connectivity Project.

 

 The Project is aimed to improve the durability, flexibility and safety of the gravel surfaced rural roads and enhance the capacity of the state to manage its rural roads network.

 

 The Project will cover 10,510 km stretch of rural roads in Madhya Pradesh that fall under the Chief Ministers Gram Sadak Yojana (CMGSY) program.

 

 

 

5. ITC signed an MoU with NITI Aayog to train 2 lakh farmers to increase their income

 

FMCG major ITC has joined hands with NITI Aayog to train 2 lakh farmers to increase their income and raise the productivity of major crops in 25 aspirational districts across seven states in the country by 2022.

 

 These 25 aspirational districts are in Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

 

 The major objective of the agreement is to increase net returns from farming through a reduction in costs of production and increasing productivity of major crops in each of identified district.

 

 

 

6. PHDCCI, Indian Yoga Association signed an MoU to promote cultural tourism in Krishna Circuit

 

The Ph.D. Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) and Indian Yoga Association (IYA) have signed an MoU to facilitate interaction and cooperation between two organizations to promote wellness, spiritual and cultural tourism in Krishna Circuit.

 

 Under this MoU, PHDCCI and IYA have joined hands to provide holistic tourism experience to domestic and international travelers looking for some spiritually invigorating and cultural experiences.

1. PNB to take help of detective agencies to locate untraceable borrowers

 

Punjab National Bank (PNB) has invited applications for empanelment of detective agencies to locate its untraceable borrowers.

 

 The PNB has also resorted to ‘Gandhigiri’ wherein its staff hopes to ‘name and shame’ defaulting borrowers to recover up to INR 150 crore worth bad loans every month.

 

 

 

2. Government to acquire RBI’s stake in National Housing Bank

 

The government is planning to acquire the stake of Reserve Bank of India in housing finance regulator National Housing Bank (NHB).

 

 RBI currently holds 100% stake in the NHB.

 

 The Finance Bill 2018 has amended the National Housing Bank Act, 1987, for transferring RBI’s stake in the NHB to the government.

 

 

 

3. Bureau of Indian Standards grants first license for Liquid Chlorine on all India basis

 

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has granted the first license to Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Ltd for Liquid Chlorine on all India basis as per Indian Standard (IS) 646:1986.

 

 This is the first license granted on All India basis. Liquid Chlorine is in liquid form and stored in metal containers.

 

 Liquid Chlorine is usually used as gas obtained by evaporating liquid from metal It is used mainly in paper, pulp, water sterilization, textile bleaching and manufacture of chemicals.

 

 

 

4. NSE’s India Index Services & Products Ltd launches Nifty Equity Savings Index

 

The National Stock Exchange’s (NSEs) arm India Index Services & Products Ltd (IISL) has launched Nifty equity savings index that will serve as a benchmark for equity saving funds offered by various mutual funds.

 

 The index will capture the performance of portfolio having exposure to equity, equity arbitrage and debt instruments in a similar way to the investment philosophy of equity savings funds.

 

 

 

5. RBI eases External borrowing norms to enable cheaper funds

 

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has relaxed External Commercial Borrowings (ECB) Policy by including more sectors in the window in order to facilitate cheaper access of overseas funds to Indian companies.

 

 RBI also has allowed companies engaged in the business of maintenance, repair and overhaul and freight forwarding to raise ECBs denominated in rupee only.

 

 RBI also relaxed norms for foreign investment in bonds by withdrawing investment cap for investors from investing in government bonds with a minimum residual maturity of three years.

1.Researchers develop a potent molecule to treat chikungunya

 

Researchers from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee have identified two small potent molecules Pep-I and Pep-II for their inhibitory activity to treat Chikungunya disease.

 

 The antiviral activity of these molecules was so high that their small amount was able to achieve almost 99% reduction in the virus. Currently, there are no drugs to treat chikungunya or any vaccine to prevent it.

 

 The antiviral activity was tested by adding molecules directly into virus culture. During studies, it was confirmed that both molecules have significant ability to kill virus.

 

 

 

2. Scientists identify four bacterial strains to remove sulphur from fossil fuels

 

Scientists from CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (CSIR-IMMT) have discovered four bacterial strains that remove sulphur from fossil fuel such as petroleum and coal. Sulphur is one of the major pollutants emitted during the combustion of fossil fuels.

 

 Researchers were also able to identify the process of bio-desulfurization of these bacterial strains through specific pathway (4-S pathway).

 

 These bacterial strains can be potentially used on commercial scale for removal of sulphur from fossil fuels on commercial

 

 

 

3. Air Force Exercise Gaganshakti-2018 concluded

The Indian Air Force conducted pan India Exercise Gagan Shakti-2018 from 08-22 Apr 2018.

 

 The aim of the exercise was real-time coordination, deployment and employment of air power in a short and intense battle scenario.

 

 The focus of the exercise was to check the viability of operational plans and learn meaningful lessons.

 

 

 

4. Bangladesh is going to launch its first satellite on May 7

 

Bangladesh will become a member of the exclusive club of satellite-owning countries as it is going to launch first commercial satellite “Bangabandhu-1″ to space on May 7 from the US.

 

 The satellite will be launched from Florida’s Cape Canaveral.

 

 Bangladesh had signed a 14-billion-taka (about $180 million) loan agreement with the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) in September 2016, to finance the country’s first-ever satellite “Bangabandhu-I”.

 

 

 

5. Indo Malaysian Joint Training Exercise HARIMAU SHAKTI 2018

 

As part of ongoing Indo-Malaysian defence cooperation, a joint training exercise Harimau Shakti is conducted in the dense forests of Sengai Perdik, Hulu Langat, Malaysia from 30 April 18 to 13 May 18.

 

 The aim of the exercise is to boost cooperation & coordination between armed forces of both the nations and to share the expertise of both the contingents in the conduct of counter-insurgency operations in jungle terrain.

 

 

 

6. Coastal Security Exercise ‘Sagar Kavach’ held in Kerala

 

A two-day coastal security exercise ‘Sagar Kavach’ was held to strengthen and assess the loopholes in the coastal security mechanism along Kerala shores.

 

 The Navy, Coastal Police and Marine Enforcement wing and various other security stakeholders were also participating in the exercise.

 

 

 

7. Giant Mosquito Measuring 11.15 cm Wingspan was Discovered in China

 

Scientists have discovered a giant mosquito with a wingspan of 11.15 centimeters in China’s Sichuan province.

 

 The mosquito belongs to the world’s largest mosquito species Holorusia Mikado.

 

 This species mosquito was first found in Japan and normally have a wingspan of about 8 centimeters.

 

 

 

8. World’s Smallest Land Fern found in the Western Ghats

 

Scientists have discovered the world’s smallest land fern named Malvi’s adder’s-tongue fern (Ophioglossum malviae) in Ahwa forests of the Western Ghats in Gujarat’s Dang district.

 

 Ferns are seasonal and mostly grow with first monsoon rains.

 

 

 

9. Fejervarya Goemchi: New frog species discovered in Goa

 

Scientists have identified a new species of frog called Fejervarya goemchi in the highland plateaus of the Western Ghats parts of Goa.

 

 It has been named after state of Goa where the species is discovered.

 

 It was identified using a combination of morphology, geographic distribution range and molecular methods to distinguish from other Fejervarya species found in South and South-East Asia.
