National:

1. Telangana has become the first State in the country to introduce compulsory gender education at the graduate level.

2. Scientists at the Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes (CIRB) in Hisar, Haryana have successfully produced a cloned buffalo offspring named ‘Cirb Gaurav’.

3. Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel inaugurated the 28th edition of International Kite Festival at Sabarmati River front in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

4. The 14th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas (PBD) was held in New Delhi.

The event was inaugurated by the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and attended by Priti Patel, MoS for Employment, United Kingdom.

5. Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a book titled “MARU BHARAT SARU BHARAT“(My India Noble India) written by Jain Acharya Ratna sunder suri swarji Maharaj.

International:

1. Nepal was elected to the UNICEF executive board, representing the group of Asia-Pacific countries for the term 2016-2018.

Sports:

1. World No. 14 Milos Raonic from Canada has won the 2016 WTA Brisbane International Tennis trophy in the men’s single category.

2. World No. 4 Stanislas Wawrinka from Switzerland has won the 2016 Chennai Open title of tennis.

3. Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis won the WTA Brisbane Tennis trophy.

4. Danish kayaker Rene Holten Poulsen was named the Denmark’s sportsperson of the year 2015.

Awards & Recognition:

1. Veteran poet Balkrishna Garg was honored with the second edition of Harikrishna Devsare Baalsahitya Award 2015 for his collection of poems for children titled ‘Baal Geet’.

2. The 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony was organized at Beverly Hills, California, United States (US). Golden Globe Awards are the annual awards that honour the best in Motion Pictures and Television for the previous year.

The winners of various awards are as follows:

Best Motion Picture Drama: The Revenant.

Best Motion Picture Musical/Comedy: The Martian.

Best Director in Motion Picture-Drama: Alejandro Inarritu for The Revenant.

Best Actor in Motion Picture-Drama: Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant.

Best Actress in Motion Picture-Drama: Brie Larson for Room.

Best Actor in Motion Picture or Musical or Comedy: Matt Damon for The Martian.

Best Actress in Motion Picture Musical or Comedy: Jennifer Lawrence for Joy.

Best Actor in a Supporting role in Motion Picture: Sylvester Stallone for Creed.

Best Actress in a Supporting role in Motion Picture: Kate Winslet for Steve Jobs.

Best Original Score Motion Picture: Ennio Morricone for The Hateful Eight.

Best Foreign Language Film: Son of Saul (Hungary).

Appointments & Resignations:

1. Homegrown smartphone maker Micromax has appointed Vikas Thapar as its Vice-President for Finance.

2. Senior IAS officer Sailesh has been appointed as Registrar General and Census Commissioner (RGCC) of India.

Science & Technology:

1. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA’s) revamped planet-hunting Kepler spacecraft has discovered more than 100 planets orbiting other stars.

The Kepler spacecraft discovered these alien planets during its second-chance K2 mission by using the transit method.

Important Dates:

1. The 11th World Hindi Day was celebrated on 10th January 2016.

To mark the occasion, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) through its missions/posts abroad and the Department of Official Language (Rajbhasha) conducted special events to spread the greatness of the language.

2. ‘Missionary Day’, anniversary of the arrival of two Welsh Christian missionaries, was observed and celebrated on 11th January 2016 across the Christian-dominated north eastern state of Mizoram.

Death:

1. Noted Hindi writer and journalist Ravindra Kalia passed away in New Delhi after suffering from liver cirrhosis. He was 78.

2. Otis Clay, American R&B and soul singer and Blues Hall of Fame inductee, died in Chicago, Illinois. He was 73.

3. Maria Teresa de Filippis, the first woman to compete in a world championship Formula One grand prix, passed away on 8 January 2016 in Italy. She was 89.
