Mumbai to have its second Government Architecture College soon

The Sir JJ College of Architecture which was set up in 1857 at Bombay is now planning to set up its second government architecture college in the state to meet the increasing demand from students.

The college authorities are planning to locate the new college in the western suburbs beyond Andheri.

Amongst 60+ architecture colleges in Mumbai, only one is a government college.

As architecture colleges in the state are not assessed for quality, the state is planning to introduce a grading system for the colleges. In a workshop organized by the DTE on Thursday, representatives from all architecture colleges will come together to finalize parameters for grading colleges. “We will study how the parameters of NAAC can be modified to include specific criteria for architecture colleges. Once the parameters are finalized, we will send it to the Council of Architecture for nod. No other states grade architecture colleges,” said a professor.
