The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) originated with the establishment of an Agricultural School at Saidapet, Madras (Tamil Nadu) in 1868. It was located at Coimbatore later in the year 1906 and affiliated to Madras University in the year 1920 and named as the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore. In 1965 the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai was established. Both the institute in the year 1971 together formed the Tamil Nadu Agriculture University.
