The First World Ocean Science Congress (WOSC) was held in Kochi, Kerala from 5th February 2015 to 8th February 2015. The Congress witnessed presentation of 450 technical papers in 13 sessions by 86 Indian institutions and 14 foreign institutions, evolved a set of recommendations that will be submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The aim of the WOSC was to find sustainable means to utilize the resources carefully without causing any damage to the oceans and its marine life.
World Ocean Science Congress (WOSC) is designed as a quadrennial event starting with WOSC-2015. It is expected to serve as a common platform for Oceanographers, Environmentalists, Fishing community, Shipping industry, Navigators, Defense establishments.
The other major recommendation made at the Congress was to establish a procedure to identify the potential use of coastal mineral resources, based on Environmental Impact Assessment.On the occasion, Madhusoodana Kurup gave away awards to winners of the WOSC Expo, and distributed prizes to winners of the students’ essay competition held as part of the Science Congress.
WOSC-2015 secretary general V N Sanjeevan, Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) director S Anantha Narayanan and WOSC general convener P A Vivekananda Pai also spoke.
