What is IIT JAM?

The full form of IIT jam is Joint Admission Test for Masters which is conducted by one of the participating IITs (Indian Institute of Technology). The aspirants who are interested in pursuing a Masters Programme from renowned Indian colleges like IITs, NITs and IISc can apply for this exam.

This year IISc Bangalore is the organizing institute for IIT JAM 2021 exam for the first time. As per the latest update, IISc Bangalore has started the Online Application portal on 10th September 2020.

Every year more than 55,000 candidates aim for admission to IITs, NITs, IISERs by appearing in the country’s top M.Sc. Entrance Exam.

Highlights of IIT JAM 2020-2021


The IIT JAM 2021 Exam will be conducted by IISc Bangalore on 14th February 2021.

The IIT JAM 2021 Online Application portal (JOAPS) is live from 10th September 2020.

 From 2021 onwards, the name of the JAM exam is changed to the Joint Admission Test for Masters which was Joint Admission Test for M.Sc earlier.

IISc Bangalore has added the Economics subject in 2021. Now the JAM 2021 Exam will be conducted for 7 subjects - Physics, Chemistry, Mathematical Statistics, Geology, Mathematics, Biotechnology and Economics.

 This year IIT JAM will be conducted across 71 Exam Centres across 8 zones.

 In the year 2020, 62,654 candidates have appeared for the IIT JAM exam. Out of these students, only 14,623 aspirants were able to qualify for this exam.

What is the Eligibility for JAM 2021 Exam?


The eligibility criteria is the very basic requirement that one must follow to appear in the exam. To apply for the topmost covered IIT M.Sc. entrance exam, an aspirant must fulfill all the requirements as mentioned in the official notification such as-

All candidates admitted through JAM Exam should have a Bachelor’s degree.

The candidates in the final year of their qualifying degree in 2021, are also eligible to apply for the exam. However, they must have completed graduation degree by the date of registration in the admitting institute.

IIT JAM Exam Pattern


Before starting your 2021 preparation, it is important to know the IIT JAM Exam Pattern. So that you can easily understand the marks weightage of the topics.

The IIT JAM Exam is divided into three sections with three different patterns of questions as follows:


Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)

Each MCQ type question has four choices out of which only one choice is the correct answer.


Multiple Select Questions (MSQ)

Each MSQ type questions are similar to MCQ but with a difference that there may be one or more than one choice(s) that are correct out of the four given choices.


Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions

These types of questions do not have any choice. The answer can be either numerical value, decimal, and an integer value.

List of Admitting Institutes for IIT JAM 2020


There are a total of 20 IITs and an IISc that offer admission to various PG courses (like MSc, Join MSc PhD, MSc PhD Dual Degree, Integrated PhD, etc) based on the IIT JAM 2020 Scores. You can check the list of IIT JAM Participating Institutes here.
