NET Exam Eligibility Criteria | How much eligible are you?
The candidates who are aspiring for the NET Exam may appear in this competitive race, only if they fulfill all the UGC NET eligibility conditions given below-

As per the above visual description of UGC NET eligibility criteria, the candidates who are applicable on following conditions may appear in the exam.
For General Category Candidates – 55% aggregate in Master’s Degree or Equivalent Degree
For ST/SC/OBC/ PWD Candidates – 50% aggregate in Master’s Degree
The Ph.D. degree holders whose Master’s level examination had been completed by 19th September, 1991 (irrespective of the date of declaration of result) shall be eligible for a relaxation of 5% in aggregate marks (i.e., from 55% to 50%) for appearing in NET.
A final year student of Master’s Degree or passed out student whose result is still awaited is also eligible for UGC NET Exam.
However, such students will only be considered for the admission for the Award of Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor when they have passed their Master’s Degree with required percentage criteria.
Candidates are neither required to send any certificates/documents in support of their eligibility nor printout of their Application Form (Confirmation Page) to CBSE. However the candidates, in their own interest, must satisfy themselves about their eligibility for the Test.
#Note- In the event of any ineligibility being detected by the UGC/CBSE at any stage, their candidature will be canceled and they shall be liable for legal action.
Candidates having post-graduate diploma/certificate awarded by Indian University/ Institute or foreign degree/diploma/certificate awarded by the foreign University/institute should in their own interest, ascertain the equivalence of their diploma/degree/certificate with Master’s degree of recognized Indian universities from Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi. The candidates can apply for UGC NET Exam only for the subject in which they have completed their Master’s Degree and in case the subject is not in the list they may apply for the related subject.
The candidates belonging to the OBC, ST/SC category or PWD, are required to submit attested copy of the category certificate along with the online print out of their application form.
The candidates must have passed their PG Degree from known Universities and Colleges.

The upper age limit criteria is as follows:
The candidates who are applying for the award of Junior Research Fellowship must not age more than 28 years.
There’s no such upper age limit criteria for Assistant Professors.
Also check the Age Relaxation benefits:
5 years’ age relaxation will be provided to candidates belonging to OBC, ST, SC, PWD and Women Applicants.
Relaxation will also be provided to the candidates having research on any subject of maximum 5 years, only if the certificate is produced by appropriate university or institute.
3 Years Relaxation in Age will be provided to the candidates possessing L.L.M. Degree.
#Note – Total Relaxation in Age will not exceed five years under any circumstances.
EXEMPTION (Eligibility for Assistant Professor)
For NET/SLET/SET Candidates
|The Candidates, who have been awarded a Ph.D. Degree in accordance with the University Grants Commission Regulation Act 2009, shall be exempted from minimum eligibility condition of NET/SLET/SET for Assistant Professor or equivalent position in Universities and Colleges.|
|The candidates who have passed the UGC/CSIR/JRF examination prior to 1989 are also exempted from appearing in NET.|
For SET Candidates
|The candidates, who have cleared the State Eligibility Test (SET) accredited by UGC for eligibility for Assistant Professor held prior to 1st June 2002, are exempted from appearing in NET for Assistant Professor anywhere in India.|
|For SET held from 1st June 2002 onwards, the qualified candidates are eligible to apply for the post of Assistant Professor only in the universities/ colleges situated in the state from where they have cleared their SET.|
