What is JRF Scholarship? Know in detail!
The University Grants Commission, offers scholarship to those talented candidates who qualify the CBSE UGC NET Exam with meritorious score. Those candidates can take complete advantage of the award of Junior Research Fellowship.
The main objective of UGC JRF Fellowship is to provide opportunities to deserving candidates to undertake advanced studies and research, leading to M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree in Humanities and Social Sciences including Languages and Sciences.
#Note - The JRF can be awarded to only those who have opted it while filling UGC NET Online Application Forms.
As per the UGC norms, only the candidates who qualify CBSE UGC NET Exam, can be eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship. However, these are qualifying tests only and do not bestow a fellowship upon the candidate.
JRF Eligibility – Who can take advantage of Scholarship?
UGC allocates number of fellowships to the universities that lies under University Grants Commission, and only these universities can choose the candidates which can be awarded with Research Fellowships.
As per the UGC JRF Eligibility Criteria, the Candidates who have qualified in NET can only be shortlisted for UGC Scholarship by universities/colleges.

Tenure of fellowship - Initially for 2 years.
The duration can be extended further for a period of three years, if the research work done by any candidate is found satisfactory by the concerned department of the University/College.
UGC NET Scholarship Amount – INR 16,000 (for initial 2 years) and INR 18,000 (after 2 years)
Contingency for Humanities and Social Sciences - INR 10,000/- per annum for initial two years and INR 20,500/- per annum for remaining three years.
Contingency for Science - INR 12,000/- per annum for initial two years and INR 25,000/- per annum for remaining three years.
Escorts/Reader Assistance – INR 2,000/- per month in case of physically and visually challenged candidates.
HRA – As per University/Institute rules.
Career Scope after Qualifying UGC NET JRF Test
The candidates who qualify the JRF Test, will be eligible to perform the lectureship or research work in any prestigious Indian University.
There are certain laboratories and institutes, which functions under University Grants Commission, they only accept the candidates who are having UGC NET JRF qualification.
And almost every month, many organizations and companies release various vacant posts (containing good salary packages), only for UGC NET qualified Junior Research Fellows. So this is a wonderful opportunity for all the selected candidates.

Selection Criteria for Awarding Junior Research Fellowships
First of all, the candidates will have to qualify the UGC NET Exam by scoring more than the cut off marks for JRF.
A merit list is prepared for qualified candidates. Amongst them, 15% candidates are awarded with the assistant professor post and remaining candidates who have opted JRF as option, while filling the application form will be awarded on the basis of following criteria-
The Commission provides a minimum of 3200 fellowships in each UGC-NET exam.
As per Government of India reservation policy, a minimum of 27%, 15%, 7.5% and 3% of Fellowships are reserved for the OBC (Non-creamy layer), SC, ST and Persons with disabilities (PWD) respectively.
Accordingly, the category-wise slots available for each category are as follows:
General Category (Unreserved) – 1520 Seats and required percentage 47.50%
OBC (Non-creamy layer) – 864 Seats and required percentage 27.00%
SC – 480 Seats and required percentage 15.00%
ST – 240 Seats and required percentage 7.5%
PWD – 96 Seats and required percentage 3.00%
