The University Grants Commission offers scholarships to those talented candidates who qualify the NTA UGC NET Exam with a commendable score. Those candidates can take complete advantage of the award of Junior Research Fellowship.
The main objective of the UGC JRF Fellowship is to provide opportunities to deserving candidates to undertake advanced studies and research, leading to an M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree in Humanities and Social Sciences, including Languages and Sciences.
If you want to do Ph.D. after your Masters, you need to be either NET or JRF-qualified. Most colleges require it to grant you admission. In case of taking admission both NET E-certificate and JRF Letter have the validity of 3 years from the issued date.
#Note - The JRF can be awarded to only those who have opted it while filling UGC NET Online Application Forms.
As per the UGC norms, only the candidates who qualify NTA UGC NET Exam can be eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship. However, these are qualifying tests only and do not bestow a fellowship upon the candidate.

The UGC NET JRF exam consists of two papers, Paper 1 is a common paper, while Paper 2 is subject-specific. Both papers are conducted in an online mode and are of objective type. The exam assesses the candidates’ knowledge, reasoning ability, and aptitude in their respective fields.

What is the difference between NET SRF & JRF?
After UGC NET JRF Passed students have opportunities to get JRF and SRF Fellowship. Many students have not know about JRF and SRF Fellowship. Some students know JRF and SRF are different terms. But these are the same on different seniority.
“JRF” is just a fellowship/stipend that a PhD candidate gets for 5 years. For first two years, the PhD candidates get the name of JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOW and after the 2nd they get promoted to SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOW and get increased fellowship called “SRF”

UGC allocates several fellowships to the universities that lie under the University Grants Commission, and only these universities can choose the candidates which can be awarded UGC NET JRF Fellowships.
As per the NET JRF Eligibility Criteria, the Candidates who have qualified in NET can only be shortlisted for UGC Scholarship by universities/colleges.

Tenure of fellowship - Initially for 3 years.
The duration can be extended further for a period of three years if the research work done by any candidate is found satisfactory by the concerned department of the University/College.
On 30th January 2019 the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology and MHRD provided guidelines for research funded.

B. Research Associate
Research Associate may be fixed at a consolidated amount at one of the 3 pay scales which depends upon the qualification and experience.
The Research Associate has a Ph.D. / MD/ MS/ MDS or equivalent degree or having completed 3 years of research teaching and design and development experience after M. Sc. / M. Pharmacy / ME/ M/ Tech with at least one research paper in Science Citation Indexed (SCI) Journal.

Fellowship Condition for JRF/ SRF/ Research Associate
- Dearness Allowance (DA):- JRF/ SRF and Research Associate will not entitled to DA
- House Rent Allowance (HRA):- HRA will be based on the fellowship amount and location city as per central norms. The hostel facility is not entitled to HRA.
- Medical Benefit: - JRF / SRF and Research Associate will be entitled to Medical Allowance.
- Leave and Other Entitlement:-
- JRF / SRF are eligible for Casual leave.
- Research Associate is entitled to leave as per host institution.
- Travel entitlement for JRF/ SRF and Research Associate for participant in scientific events/workshops in India will continue to be the same as earlier 2nd AC by Rail.
- Bonus and Leave travel Concession: - JRF/ SRF/ Research Associate will not entitle to these benefits.
- Retirement Benefit: - JRF/ SRF/ Research Associate will not be entitled to these benefits.
- Publication / Patent:-Published in a standard Refereed Journal.
The UGC has revised the rates of Fellowship amount under the UGC Scheme for JRF/SRF in Science, Humanities and Social Sciences.
Contingency for Humanities and Social Sciences - INR 10,000/- per annum for initial two years and INR 20,500/- per annum for remaining three years.
Contingency for Science - INR 12,000/- per annum for initial two years and INR 25,000/- per annum for remaining three years.
Escorts/Reader Assistance – INR 2,000/- per month in case of physically and visually challenged candidates
Selection Criteria for Awarding Junior Research Fellowships
First of all, the candidates will have to qualify the UGC NET Exam by scoring minimum marks to be obtained for considering a candidate for the award of JRF. They are required to obtain minimum marks in Paper I, Paper-II.

A merit list will be prepared for the qualified candidates. Amongst them, top 6% candidates will be awarded the Assistant Professor post which was 15% earlier.

The remaining candidates who have opted for NTA NET JRF will be awarded based on the following criteria.
The Commission provides a minimum of 3200 fellowships in each UGC-NET exam.
The allocation of NET JRF slots among different subjects are done category-wise.
