An aquifer should have high Porosity and permeability value. Sandstone and highly jointed Granite can form good aquifers. Sandstones have large grain (sand size) which leads to the good porosity and permeability even after consolidation. Commonly sandstones have high primary porosity. Highly jointed Granite will have very high value of secondary Porosity. Joint will work as a media for fluid percolation i.e. will form a good aquifer.

Sandstone and highly jointed granite (having fractures in appreciable amount) are the best aquifer, While massive granite will not form aquifer. Shale is basically a aquiclude (an argillaceous rock having clay as sediments with high porosity).
