The degrees of freedom at high enough temperatures is given by (f/2)k , f being the degress of freedom. For a diatomic molecule ,generally there are 5 degress of freedom ,3 are translational and the other 2 are rotational . So the specific heat at constant volume become 2.5 k. Now seeing the answer,I believe either there is a typo or it may also be the case where two more degrees of freedom are present ,so f =7 and f/2=3.5 such that specific heat become 3.5 k . These 2 new degrees of freedom may represent vibrational motion .
