option A is right The purpose of a literature review is to: Provide foundation of knowledge on topic. Identify areas of prior scholarship to prevent duplication and give credit to other researchers. Identify inconstancies: gaps in research, conflicts in previous studies

Option b is the right answer. Basic purpose of the review of the literature is to examine the trend of the research. Reviewing the literature will let us know about all type of researches done on that particular area and to have an idea of the trend in research. With the help of this we can also find various research patterns and research gaps which further help us to form an effective research problem.

D : Literature Review actually helps you address research gaps by previous authors and that helps you select and prioritise your research problem.

For those who are getting confused with option B. If you go through the steps of research there is no such step like to examine the trend of research. A researcher may feel the need to do so only in order to formulate a specific research problem.

literature Review may be both, a process and/or a product. When one is going through different articles, books, journals etc in order to extract a summary on a particular topic, this act of evaluation is considered as a process (Reviewing literature). However as a result of the evaluation of different sources(literature),what one gets as a succinct but explicit and conclusive summary, is referred to as the review of literature or literature review. Here in second case it's a product of the evaluations and surveys of previously done work on the topic. Now coming to the question, when a researcher starts considering to research on a topic or in a field, he thinks of a general or comparitively broader aspect of the topic. In order to be more specific about what has already been done and what can be or is left to be done, he needs to review the literature. It helps him in shaping his research idea into a more concrete and specific problem. Hence option D- "To decide a research problem is the correct answer".
