what is cofficient of restitution??

A ball of mass m , initially at rest, is dropped from a height of 5 meters. If the coefficient of restitution is 0.9, the speed of the ball just before it hits the floor the second time is approximately (take g =9.8 m/s* ) (a) 9.80 m/s (b)9.10 m/s (c)8.91 m/s (d)7.02 m/s

I defined coefficient of restitution first. It's definately is the ration of two velocities as shown in diagram below. its value is equal to 1 for elastic collision. and for inelastic collision it's value varies from 0 to 0.999 , its value is 0 for perfectly inelastic collision.
