a water tank has an inlet and an outlet. the inlet is capable of filling the tank in 20 min. and outlet is capable of emptying the tank in 40 min. When the outlet was opened to fill the empty tank, person did not notice that outlet was open. So both the inlet and outlet were open. in how much time will the tank be just filled ?

    Rate for the inlet pipe is 1/20 Rate for the outlet pipe is 1/40 The COMBINED rate of the two pipes together is 1/20 - 1/40 = 1/40 which means that if both pipes are open, and if volume starts as 1 EMPTY tank, the tank would be filled in 40 minutes.
