Project Gutenberg (PG) is a volunteer effort to digitize and archive cultural works, to "encourage the creation and distribution of eBooks". It was founded in 1971 by American writer Michael S. Hart and is the oldest digital library.
The Publisher Program was first known as 'Google Print' when it was introduced at the Frankfurt Book Fair in October 2004. The Google Books Library Project, which scans works in the collections of library partners and adds them to the digital inventory, was announced in December 2004.
Open Library began in 2006 with Aaron Swartz as the original engineer and leader of Open Library's technical team.
Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) is a directory of open access books of academic nature. It provides a search tool to find an open access book regardless of its location in the web world. The purpose of DOAB is “to increase discoverability of open access books.” DOAB was founded by OAPEN Foundation, which is a not-for-profit organization based in the Netherlands (DOAB, 2016).
