A Petrarchan Sonnet has 14 lines, divided into 2 subgroups: an octave and a sestet. The octave follows a rhyme scheme of ABBA ABBA. The sestet follows one of two rhyme schemes—either CDE CDE scheme (more common) or CDC CDC.   A Spenserian sonnet is a variation on the Shakespearean sonnet, with a more challenging rhyme scheme: ABAB BCBC CDCD EE.

moreover, how does the division of a sonnet into octave and sestet affect the theme of the sonnet ?

the octave generally states the problem or the theme of the narrative and the sestet usually tries to give a solution, if any at all.

this is usually the case with petrarchan sonnet. in Spenser, as the beloved is not unattainable as it is in petrarch therefore it is often in the mood of celebration.
