Hello student, degree of freedom is the number of independent variables/coordinates required to specify the position of the particles of the system. When the particles are restricted to move on a certain region, let say ‘m’ restrictions/ constraints are imposed in the system, then the original degree of freedom is reduced to 3N-m in 3D.

Ans: talikng of 1D harmonic oscillator ,we have taken a phase space ( not our usual 3d space) ,so the only coordinates there we have our momentum and position ,this they only can change ( this p-q space is a hypothetical one , theoretical one) but their in Kinetic theory of gas ,when we talk of real space ,the 3D space and particle can do translation ,rotation n vibration .

Yup. I know this.. But what about the rests?? what is 3N - K and 3N case?? how to interrelate the concepts?? I want a clear picture about dofs.. which I am not getting...

why in case of Harmonic oscillator we are using phase space.. not ordinary 3D space? how to decide where you need to use 3D space where to use phase space while obtaining DOFs... all of such questions always puzzles my mind. but I don't get the ans, even in internate...
