Consider a number 54 expressed in a base different from ten. What is the base of this number system if its equivalent value in the decimal system is 49 ?

    Let the base be x.
            Expanding the base x number 54 in powers of its base and equating to its decimal equivalent, we get
                5x + 4 = 49,
                5x = 45,
                x = 9, the required Base.
