Csir net dec, 2016 :statistical mechanics

Is' nt the quantity with in log() function is a dimension less quantity, how the quantities given in this question are dimension less quantities??

    first of all, this is a really interesting question and even I had to put good efforts to come to a conclusion . Actually, in question it's written apart form an additive constant and the answer to your doubt lies there. it's true log is for dimensionless quantity but this is also true in physics we take log of quantities having dimensions, and what makes this possible is this constant which when put in log form makes the actual quantity in log dimensionless. visit this for a wonderful insight to this concept and feel free for any doubts. http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physics/General/logs.html
