Formalism may be defined as a critical approach in which the text under discussion is considered primarily as a structure of words. That is, the main focus is on the arrangement of language, rather than on the implications of the words, or on the biographical and historical relevance of the work in question. The narration of “A Rose for Emily” is written in first person, or as a member of the community. ... The Utilitarian Approach assesses an action in terms of its consequences or outcomes; i.e., the net benefits and costs to all stakeholders on an individual level. It strives to achieve the greatest good for the greatest number while creating the least amount of harm or preventing the greatest amount of suffering. When individuals are deciding what to do for themselves alone, they consider only their own utility. For example, if you are choosing ice cream for yourself, the utilitarian view is that you should choose the flavor that will give you the most pleasure.

Utilitarianism- it gives importance to "situation or outcome" arising from the act to determine whether acceptable or not. It based on maxim that " the end justifies the means". It says an act is good in so far as it maximises good" result". Formalism- it gives importance to the "act " to determine whether it is right or wrong. It focuses on rules that are right not on result.
