Trevelyan, full name Charles Edward Trevelyan was born in the year:(1807 to 1886). his writings are renowned and especially his published Education of the people of India in 1838. his writing is a reliable and rigorous defence of the educational changes that had taken place in colonial rule in India during 1830s, which led to a western based curriculum replacing traditional Indian learning. his work is a response to the arguments of orientalists such as Wilson during the time of 1786 and 1860, Wilson retired from govt office in India, but advocating an orientalist educational policy. Trevelyan mentioned in his arguments for the moral and intellectual advantages of English as the principle language of instruction and defended the govts resolution of March 1835 that specified indians should be educated by the study of European literature, culture and science. it was one of the most influential anglicist tracts of the Indian educational debates, and it gives valuable insight into the ideas behind what became standard govts educational policy. A 200 - page argument for how the natives desire English education and why the east india company govt. practice has moved from an emphasis on traditional native learning towards English education, both in the language, and the sciences, this work followed the 1835 decision by William Bentinckbto abolish furthur support for Sanskrit and Persian colleges, and institute a English based education system for the natives. it also covers the period 1813 to 1837. a much more nuanced position compared to the infamous Macaulay minute 1835. the main point could be: Indian education under the east india company Orientalists vs anglicist debate GCPI (General committee of public instruction) GCPI Report, December 1831 Resolution of government, dated 11th March 1835 Desire among natives for the benefit of European instruction
