    The largest thesis of Mitchell's book is that the power relationships of patriarchy get imbedded in the child's unconscious mind through the Oedipus complex. Mitchell thinks the key lesson both boys and girls learn is that father has disposition over mother. The girl suffers over not having a penis because it means she can never take father's place. Mitchell is apparently suggesting that unconscious symbolism is the interface between the political and the psychological.
