Electrocyclic reaction will take place only in cis alkenes and alkynes or it can happen in trans alkens

    yes, electrocyclic reaction takes place in only cis alkene.not in trans alkene or alkyne because symmetric approach is not possible. but if trans double bonds are arranged in such a way that symmetric approach is possible after rotation about single bond then electrocyclic reaction can be possible. check the below example
