Cloning new organs from stem cells is another way that stem cells can aid people waiting for donor organs. Cloning is the act of reprogramming a cell by replacing its nucleus with that of another cell so it becomes the genetic equivalent of the original. A special process helps isolate the needed cells by using a centrifuge. Those cells are then delivered to the area of injury – such as an arthritic knee – through ultrasound guidance. The stem cells activate to create healthy new tissue to replace the damaged bone, cartilage, ligament, tendon or muscle. Stem cell transplantation (SCT), sometimes referred to as bone marrow transplant, is a procedure in which a patient receives healthy stem cells to replace damaged stem cells. Before SCT, the patient receives high doses of chemotherapy, and sometimes radiation therapy, to prepare the body for transplantation. Accumulating evidence suggests that stem cells can accelerate the tissue regeneration through various mechanisms. To date, a variety of stem cells, including mesenchymal, embryonic, and induced pluripotent stem cells, have been reported to promote regeneration of damaged tissues.
