For instance, the intension of “ship” as a substantive is “vehicle for conveyance on water,” whereas its extension embraces such things as cargo ships, passenger ships, battleships, and sailing ships. The distinction between intension and extension is not the same as that between connotation and denotation.

Intension refers to the logical or definitional conditions that specify the set of all possible things a word or phrase could describe, while extension refers to the set of all actual things the word or phrase describes.

Semantic barriers means problems arising out of different meaning of words. There are some technical terms used solely by some groups such as lawyers, engineers, doctors , etc. They use their own specialized jargon which cannot be understood by someone outside the group. Words are of 2 types - extensional and intensional. Extensional words are clear in their meaning and do not generally create barriers to communication. Example- boy, garden, table, fan. Intensional words are words that describe something and have different meaning to different people. Example -good, bad ,beautiful. "She is a good girl. " Such a simple sentence can create confusion as the meaning of "good" Is perceived differently by different people.
