The Father of demographic theory is Warren Thomson (American 1887-1973). And he developed this theory in 1929. John Graunt is father of demographic studies (1620-1674), he was an English statistician. He is generally considered as the father of demographics, because he was the founder of the science of demography or the statistical study of human populations. Demographic Transition Theory (DTT) was developed by Frank Notestein in 1945. This theory provides an explanation of how fertility and mortality rates impact the age distribution and growth rate of populations. The ideals expressed in the DTT originate with the work of Warren Thompson in 1929. Theory of Demographic Transition is a theory that throws light on changes in birth rate and death rate and consequently on the growth-rate of population. Demographic transition theory suggests that populations grow along a predictable five-stage model. Stage 1, pre-industrial society, death rates and birth rates are high and roughly in balance, and population growth is typically very slow and constrained by the available food supply. Stage 2, that of a developing country, the death rates drop rapidly due to improvements in food supply and sanitation, which increase life spans and reduce disease. Stage 3, birth rates fall due to access to contraception, increases in wages, urbanization, increase in the status and education of women, and increase in investment in education. Population growth begins to level off. Stage 4, birth rates and death rates are both low. The large group born during stage two ages and creates an economic burden on the shrinking working population. Stage 5 (only some theorists acknowledge this stage—others recognize only four), fertility rates transition to either below-replacement or above-replacement. Demographic transition theory: Describes four stages of population growth, following patterns that connect birth and death rates with stages of industrial development.
