    Assimilation efficiency depends on the quality of the food source and the physiology of the consumer. Unassimilated food returns as feces. Carnivores have higher assimilation efficiency (about 80 percent) than do terrestrial herbivores (5 to 20 percent). Thus statement A is correct. Production Efficiency = Net production/assimilation. Invertebrates are better than vertebrates at this, and cold blooded species do better than warm blooded species. Vertebrates spend a huge amount of energy obtaining food, and the basal metabolic rate of warm blooded organisms uses a lot of energy. Hence statement C is wrong.
