How will you reprogramme stem cells

    In order to turn adult cells back into pluripotent or embryonic-like stem cells, scientists use viruses to insert four genes – Sox2, Oct4, Klf4, and cMyc – into the cells. These reprogrammed cells, called induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells), have generated a huge amount of excitement in the field. Several recent studies have claimed that cancer cells can be reprogrammed into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). However, in most cases, cancer cells seem to be resistant to cellular reprogramming. Furthermore, the underlying mechanisms of limited reprogramming in cancer cells are largely unknown. Scientists have discovered ways to take an ordinary cell, such as a skin cell, and “reprogram” it by introducing several genes that convert it into a pluripotent cell. These genetically reprogrammed cells are known as induced pluripotent cells, or iPS cells.
