A significant negative correlation between two variables suggests high degree of inverse relationship between the directions of the variables. For example let's assume a car travelling a fixed distance. The speed of the car and time taken for travel would have a negative correlation, i.e. higher the speed, lesser the time taken and lesser the speed, higher the time taken. As seen from this example, both the variables are affecting each other.

A negative correlation is a relationship between two variables that move in opposite directions. In other words, when variable X increases, variable Y decreases. A negative correlation is also known as an inverse correlation.
