The law of dominance will apply here. There are 2 alleles for a trait/gene. One allele which is dominant does not let other allele express, the one which is masked by dominant allele is known as recessive allele. The recessive allele will express only when dominant allele is not present. In the given question, the female who produces black progeny must be homozygous dominant for the dominant allele. Let us suppose 'B' allele represents dominant allele whereas 'b' allele represents recessive allele. BB genotype is for homozygous dominant. It will always produce black progeny. Bb genotype is for heterozygous dominant. It will always produce black progeny. bb genotype is for homozygous recessive. It will always produce white progeny. Now if we will cross BB women with any other male i.e. with either Bb or bb then the progeny will have genotypes as shown in the punette square box. It is clear that a woman with BB genotype will always produce black progeny, it doesn't matter with who she mates. So the woman in the given question who produces black progeny must have BB genotype. Another black female who produces black progeny must be heterozygous dominant i.e. Bb genotype and must have mated with a homozygous recessive male with genotype bb. She will prouduce half white progeny and half black progeny. The punette square box depicting their cross is attached.
