Many firms employ a lower-cost, scaled-down version of a data warehouse called a data mart. A data mart is a small data warehouse that is designed for the end-user needs in a strategic business unit (SBU) or a department.
A data silo is a repository of fixed data that remains under the control of one department and is isolated from the rest of the organization, much like grain in a farm silo is closed off from outside elements. Data silos can have technical or cultural roots.
A data warehouse is a database designed to enable business intelligence activities: it exists to help users understand and enhance their organization's performance. It is designed for query and analysis rather than for transaction processing, and usually contains historical data derived from transaction data, but can include data from other sources. Data warehouses separate analysis workload from transaction workload and enable an organization to consolidate data from several sources.
Data mining is the practice of examining large pre-existing database in order to generate new information. It is a powerful technology with great potential to help companies focus on most important information in their data warehouses.
