Newtonian potential

hi I am not understanding the concept of Newtonian Potential in Field Theory of Geophysics. kindly help. thanks 😊.

    Potential is nothing but the amount of work done to bring a unit mass from a infinite distance to desired distance.. potential is a scalar quantity as work is also scalar. like in electrostatic F=(k q1 q2/r ^2) work done in bringing unit positive test charge to certain distance r means q2 = 1 we know work= F . r w= potential =( k q1 /r^2)* r =( k q1 /r ) (potential due to gravity is G m1/r) G= gravity const m1 = mass r= distance from m1
