The main difference between inner and outer orbital complexes is that the hybridization of the atomic orbitals of the central metal atom of inner orbital complex involves inner shell d orbitals whereas the hybridization of the atomic orbitals of the central metal atom of outer orbital complex involves outermost shell d orbitals. The coordination number of central metal in these complexes is 6 having d2sp3 hybridisation. The complexes formed, if have inner d orbitals are called low spin complexes or inner orbital complexes and if having outer d orbitals are called high spin or outer orbital complex. If the ligand is strong field ligand (CN, CO, en, etc.) then the compound will be an inner orbital compound otherwise it would be a outer orbital complex
