Pachytene is the third stage of meiosis prophase-1 (a five-stage process). It is preceded by the zygotene stage, where synapsis, i.e. pairing of homologous chromosomes take place. Recombination or crossing over takes place at this stage. ... The enzyme involved in crossing over is known as recombinase.

Third step of prophase I, pachytene (Greek meaning "thick") comes after synapsis is over. Chromatin has condensed enough that chromosomes can now be resolved in microscopy. Recombination or crossing over takes place at this stage. see the attached diagrams for clear understanding. then in next step...Chiasmata is formed in the Diplotene phase. Note: In the prophase I of meiosis crossing over take place. The point at which the crossing over takes place is called the chiasmata.
