If a constant, k, is added to each number in a set of data, the mean will be increased by k and the standard deviation will be unaltered (since the spread of the data will be unchanged). previous mean=10 s.d.=3 coefficient of variation=3/10=0.30 new mean would be 10+2=12 new s.d.=3 new coefficient of variation=s.d./mean 3/12=1/4=.25 so coefficient of variation decreased.
