Energy of a van der Waals interaction as two atoms approach each other. The energy is "most favorable" at the van der Waals contact distance. Owing to electron–electron repulsion, the energy rises rapidly as the distance between the atoms becomes shorter than the contact distance. van der Waals Interactions: The basis of a van der Waals interaction is that the distribution of electronic charge around an atom fluctuates with time. 😎
