Autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved, lysosomal pathway of engulfment, degradation and recycling of cellular contents including longlived proteins and organelles. Autophagy promotes cell survival, maintaining cellular homeostasis under resting and stress conditions. The process requires formation of a double-membrane structure containing the sequestered cytoplasmic material, the autophagosome (A), that ultimately fuses with the lysosome (B) and gives autophagolysosome (C).
