    Regarding the Muslims, the Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Application Act, 1937 (Government of India, Act No. 26 of 1937) abrogated the prevailing customs in favour of the Muslim Personal Law giving property rights to women under the Islamic Law. It became applicable to all Muslims of India (except to those of the state of J and K) and to all kinds of property, with three main exceptions : agricultural land, testamentary succession in certain communities and charities, other than waqfs (Fyzee 2005).
