    The ratio of 9:7 is the example of complementary gene interaction. It means that when both the genes are present in dominant form  (AABB), then only red color will be produced, otherwise, there will be white colour(A-bb or aaB- or aabb). This shows that mutations are present in different genes not on same gene. Therefore,, we can say that the mutations are non-allelic in nature.
    They recognized that the two genes interact to produce the overall flower color; when genes work in tandem to produce a single gene product, it is called complementary gene interaction.
