Ugc net commerce statistics

The sum total of the values of two variables X and Y is equal for all the observations. The value of the coefficient of correlation between 'X and 'Y' is: (1) 1 (perfectly positive) (3) (2) (perfectly negative) Zero (No correlation) (4) 0<1 (Imperfect correlation) ....can anyone plz explain why ans is negative....

    Hello. This is a fairly easy to understand question. as I've explained in your previous question the concept of correlation coefficient, I'm simply going to explain you the answer. Suppose the sum total of observations X and Y is 10. For this, if x is 1, y will be 9 if x is 2, y will be 8 if x is 3, y will be 7 and so on.. we can see that this is a perfectly negative correlation (-1) as the value of x goes down, the value of y goes up in equal proportions and if the value of x goes up, the value of y goes down in equal proportions. so this is an example of perfect negative (-1) correlation.
