Cognition is a term referring to the mental processes involved in gaining knowledge and comprehension. These cognitive processes include thinking, knowing, remembering, judging, and problem-solving. 1 These are higher-level functions of the brain and imagination, perception, and planning.

In the literal sense, cognitive means 'Relating to the part of mental functions that deals with logic, as opposed to affective which deals with emotions.' However in the layman's language Cognitive means 'thinking capacity' of a person. Cognitive means to understand by self directed thinking. For example- if a teacher starts GD in a class on a topic, the points that you provide on the topic is your understanding to the topic and what you think about the particular topic, that is called your cognitive skill.
