The reduction of carbonyl group into an alcohol using the combination of sodium borohydride (NaBH4) and cerium chloride (CeCl3) in methanol as the reducing reagent is generally known as the Luche reduction.and the combination of NaBH4 and CeCl3 is referred to as the Luche reagent. The study finds that reaction occurs under very mild conditions and tolerates a variety of functional groups within the same substrates and always gives 1,2‐addition products if the carbonyl group is conjugated to an alkenyl, aryl, or alkynyl group. This reduction also demonstrates chemoselectivity between ketone and aldehyde groups and certain level of stereoselectivity and diastereoselectivity.

The Luche reduction is an organic reaction used to convert an α,β-unsaturated ketone to an allylic alcohol using cerium trichloride, sodium borohydride, and an alcohol solvent. The role of the cerium or other lanthanide metals is to coordinate to the alcohol, making its proton more acidic which allows for it to be abstracted by the carbonyl oxygen of the ketone starting material. The NaBH4 starting regent also reacts with the cerium activated alcohol to form a series of alkoxyborohydrides and these "hard reagents" result in the 1,2 hydride attack on the protonated carbonyl to give the final allylic alcohol product Thank you for asking this question.
