Exponential growth is continuous population growth in an environment where resources are unlimited; it is density-independent growth. dN/dt = rN where dN/dt = change in population size; r = instrinsic rate of increase (= per capita rate of increase and equals birth rate minus death rate); N = population size. ***At “zero density” (only one organism), R0 is maximal and r becomes rmax. For any given density above zero density, both R0 and r decrease until, at K, the population ceases to grow.

in logistics growth ,why it should be r max

simple bcz resources are limited and therefore population can't grow at the same pace. so there is a carrying capacity right. also in logistics model greatest population growth rate is achieved at K/2 i.e. half of carrying capacity, and population with a greater value of r will reach K more rapidly (suppose one organism, or a perfect competitive vacuum), R0 is maximal and r becomes rmax.
