    hydro...means water phobia..hating/fear whereas philic.. Loving so if a molecule is polar it will be water loving .. hydrophilic since it can easily make hydrogen bonds with water. having an affinity for water; capable of interacting with water through hydrogen bonding. Etymology: from Greek hydros, meaning “water” and philia, meaning “friendship”. Nature is based upon contact angle. thus can be distinguished. see diagram non-polar molecules are hydrophobic bcz they are unable to make hydrogen bonds.okay
