working as a pump (ion antiport cation exchanger) using ATP energy, pumps 3 Na+ ions outside and 2 K+ inside across the plasma membrane, thus maintaining positive charge extra-cellular and negative charge cytoplasmic side of plasma membrane. now coming to function it is very important for neurons to transmit signals by maintaining electrochemical gradient across PM. thus our brain can process information.
