Think it geometrically.R×R is nothing but a two dimensional Euclidean space.Any member of it ,a two component vector both are real number.Every element in R2 is a point in our usual X-Y plane .Now it maybe origin(0,0) or any (a,b) where a,b are any real number .

Set R*R ={ (x,y): x€R & y€ R} it contains ordered pair like (0,1) (0,0),(-2.1,7) Any two real numbers together can form an ordered pair. And R*R contains every such ordered pair. We can say R*R represents the 2D-plane i.e every points of (x,y) plane.

    r×r = {(X,y) : X and y are real no.} i.e. set of all points of xy-plane

That means x,y can be same numbers?

they may be same or distinct. basically it represents set of all those points which are on xy-plane
