A prominent acculturation theory proposes that adjustment after migration is “a two dimensional process, in which both the relationship with the traditional or ethnic culture and the relationship with the new or dominant culture must be considered, and these two relationships may be independent”. This two dimensional conceptualization of the acculturation process is less useful in receiving societies consisting of a mixture of ethnic minorities - constituting the proverbial “melting pot.”
Adjustment : Living in harmony with the environment while satisfying one’s needs. The word adaptation is often utilized, although the term is intended to convey positive connotations and serve as a goal for the client. Human service workers are critical of the fact that all too often adjustment implies conformity.
