The starting point for Bakunin’s critique of the existing capitalist society was his prescription that individual freedom was the highest value. Since the state was the most complete form of domination it was an unconditional enemy of individual freedom. The state does not create any preconditions for freedom nor does it secure liberty. To the Anarchists, therefore, the proletarian revolution must end all forms of coercive organizations. On this basis they rejected the dictatorship of the proletariat for they feared that it may very well become a status quo giving rise to fresh set of inequities, privileges, oppression, terror and injustices. The dictatorship of the proletariat could become a dictatorship on the proletariat. Bakunin in his Statism and Anarchy (1873) contended that the Marxist political order could turn out to be a rigid oligarchy of technocrats and officials.
