In A Theory of Justice, Rawls addresses the idea that his theory may be similar to utilitarianism. However, he only discusses the classical form of utilitarianism, and by doing this, creates a rather weak argument for distinguishing between the two theories. The main difference he sees is that utilitarianism does not prohibit the unequal distribution of goods for the greatest aggregate welfare, and his theory does. He says that while utilitarianism allows for the greater gains of some to compensate for the lesser losses of others, his theory does not.
