Francis Jeffrey (1773-1850) was an acute and frank critic of new literature and his severe criticism, chiefly of the poet, William Wordsworth upset many readers. He founded the critical journal The Edinburgh Review a scottish magazine (1802-1929) and remained it long time editor. In a review of Robert southeys Thalaba, he wrote, They are dissenters from the established system in poetry and criticism ... a sect of dissenters from established systems who have liberated themselves from the bondage of ancient authority.
